A brief history of Whisker City

Whisker City was founded by April Brown in 1995 as an effort to help abused and neglected animals. The shelter is part of Blue Sky Charities, a non-profit 501-c-3 organization that focuses on helping both homeless people and homeless pets.

Whisker City is located in Shoreline and housed in a pair of rental properties owned by April and her husband Mike. They’ve placed over 1400 cats in homes in the area.

The majority of placements are made from the “Whiskers on Wheels” adoption bus. Thanks to a grant from Maddies’s Fund, a shuttle bus was purchased in 2008 to replace the old school bus that acted as our adoption vehicle for four years. The WOW bus now goes out five days per week, and parks in front of pet stores where the public can climb aboard and view the cats available for adoption.

Whisker City has experienced substantial growth the past year. In addition to a new WOW bus, we now have three employees, one full time and two part-time. Our shelter space has doubled with the purchase and re-model of a second house last fall. We also acquired four smaller structures that will house special needs cats and we had a new structure built to house our feral cats, or "lifers".

One thing that has not changed is the crisis in people’s lives that bring cats to our shelter. We have a standing joke that goes: “we’ve never had a cat call us looking for a home, it’s always a person.” It’s true! PEOPLE are the ones in crisis, not the cats. The current economic downturn has made many animals disposable, adding one more reason why cats end up at Whisker City.

Whisker City’s work involves two primary areas: direct care and placement. We feed and house the cats and administer needed medical work to get them adjusted. Then they go on the Whiskers on Wheels bus where we make a match with a person looking to adopt them in to a permanent home. We do not spend money on political activity/lobbying, education or marketing and we receive no governmental support. We rely heavily on volunteers, fundraisers, grants and donations.
