KITTY
CLIMB!
Whisker
City’s 1st annual Kitty Climb is suddenly just two
weeks away! On June 27th, volunteers Mike Brown and Dave
Sizer will strap on 45 pounds of gear and start the long
climb of Mt. Rainier, one they hope ends in the volcanic
crater 14,411 feet above sea level.
Mike
and Dave began training in February, and their hikes have
included Golden Gardens in Seattle, Poo Poo Point, Tiger
Mountain and Mount Si. They typically get together every
Monday and head for a trailhead somewhere. They were greeted
by rain on the first dozen or so climbs, but things have
gotten much better as spring has arrived.
The
guys are climbing for Whisker City in an effort to raise
money to upgrade our facilities at the shelter. Most needed
on the list is new plumbing in the primary shelter area that
will allow us to install a bathroom for the volunteers & staff,
sinks, washer/dryer and dishwasher. We would also do general
remodeling & design
to make the operation work even smoother and provide for
more sanitary conditions for the cats.
Personal note from Mike:
“First of all, thanks to everyone who has donated toward
this project. We are very excited about getting the work
done!
“I would have never imagined myself going this far
to help an animal shelter. As a life-long asthmatic, we never
had pets growing up, and it wasn’t until I met my wife
April, who started Whisker City, that I ever was involved
in the animal world.
“The
work that gets done around here is remarkable, and the
biggest thing I’ve noticed is how much help
is done for both cats AND PEOPLE! Over the last three days
we made a terrific match with a cat who has been with us
a long time and a great lady who was looking for this type
of calico. On the flip side, we took in a cat from a woman
who had to move into a nursing home, but couldn’t bring
her cat with her. Watching her break down after leaving that
cat behind was gut-wrenching, and it’s something we’ve
experienced over and over.
“But that’s what we’re here for, and that’s
why we want to improve the conditions of the shelter another
notch. That’s also why I’m willing to train for
five months to climb Mt. Rainier to help raise the money
needed to have the work done.”
If
you haven’t donated to the Kitty Climb, please consider
helping us out. And if you have already, thanks so much.
Perhaps you’d consider a second donation to get us
closer to our goal of $28,822, or one dollar for every foot
Dave and Mike plan to climb. Right now we are almost halfway
to our goal, so thanks for thinking of us and the great work
that is getting accomplished.
